Plot summary
At the outset of the story, the protagonist and narrator, Holden, shares his experiences leading up to the previous Christmas from what seems to be a sanatorium. The narrative unfolds at Pencey Prep School, where Holden is on his way to bid farewell to Spencer, his history teacher. Having failed most of his classes and subsequently being expelled, Holden discloses this information to the reader.
After his visit with Spencer, Holden encounters his roommate, Ward Stradlater, who requests him to compose an essay for the English class while he goes on a date with a longtime friend of Holden’s. Agreeing to the task, Holden writes about his younger brother Allie’s baseball glove, a poignant reflection on Allie’s battle with leukemia. Holden gives his ex-girlfriend Sally Hayes a call early the following morning. They spend the day together until she leaves sobbing after Holden says something hurtful. Carl Luce, a former classmate of Holden’s, shows up at a bar after they both meet, but Luce quits early due to Holden’s crude remarks.
Holden stays behind and indulges in his own intoxication. He walks about Central Park after he leaves till the cold forces him to his family’s apartment. Entering covertly, still unready to confront his parents, he discovers Phoebe, his ten-year-old sister. When she finds out that Holden has failed, she becomes angry and accuses him of having no taste. Holden tells his sister about his desire of being at this point.
