The Piano Lesson unfolds in the backdrop of Pittsburgh during the year 1936, predominantly within Doaker Charles’ residence. The focal point of the parlor is a 137-year-old upright piano adorned with totems reminiscent of African sculpture.
The narrative commences at dawn as Boy Willie, Doaker’s nephew, arrives with his companion, Lymon. Hailing from Mississippi, they seek to sell watermelons. Having spent three years at the notorious Parchman Prison Farm, Willie reunites with his sister, Berniece, residing with Doaker.
Willie, eager to share a celebratory moment, discloses a significant event: the Ghosts of the Yellow Dog have purportedly drowned Sutter in his own well. He envisions selling the family piano to finance the acquisition of Sutter’s land, the same land cultivated by their ancestors during slavery. However, Doaker remains skeptical, anticipating Berniece’s reluctance to part with the piano. Despite Berniece being approached by Reverend Avery Brown, who courts her since her husband Crawley’s demise, she adamantly refuses to sell the piano. Undeterred, Willie devises a plan to personally engage with the potential buyer.
The atmosphere becomes tense when Berniece, off-stage, vehemently urges someone to leave, claiming to have witnessed Sutter’s ghost uttering Boy Willie’s name. Convinced that her brother played a role in Sutter’s demise by pushing him into the well, Berniece is shaken and resolute in her refusal to support Willie’s endeavors.
